Nash and Clarke Named ACAA All-Conference
(Halifax, NS) The University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves attended the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association Basketball Championship awards banquet where they saw two of their players walk away with league accolades.
4th year guards Daren Clarke (Hamilton, ON) and AJ Nash (St. John’s, NL) were both named ACAA All-Conference players.
Clarke, in his first year with the Seawolves, was one of the league’s top scorers at 16.9 points per game and one of the league’s top rebounding guards at 6.4 per game. The veteran transfer from the University of Prince Edward Island was a consistent threat attacking the rim for the Seawolves, creating offensive opportunities for himself and teammates.
“Daren has been the perfect fit for our system from day one,” said Seawolves head coach, Paul Vaughan. “Not only is he a great player, but he stepped into a veteran locker room with high expectations and became a leader right away. He's also shown incredible versatility on both ends of the floor, from his rebounding and on-ball defense to his shot-making and ability to balance being a scorer and a playmaker.”
Nash has been a case study of hard work and growth within his game. When he stepped foot on UNB Saint John campus he was projected as a wing defender who may not score at a consistent clip, down the stretch of his second year with the Seawolves he was transitioned to point guard for the team, and since then he has blossomed as a player, while maintaining his defensive prowess. Nash finished 2nd in the ACAA in scoring, while being one of the league’s most efficient shooters at 59.2%.
“At the end of last season, AJ set some ambitious goals for himself and for this team and he's been locked in ever since,” added Vaughan. “The success he's having on the court isn't a surprise to anyone who gets to be around him every day. That intensity people love to watch on game nights; that's just how he is in practice, in his workouts, every single day.”
The Seawolves come into championships as the #3 seed and will face the Mount Allison Mounties in the third game of Friday, with tipoff scheduled for 6:00pm. If you are unable to be there in person you can watch the game live at acaa.tv.
